New Year’s in Prison a Happy One, Says Man Avoiding Family

Hope you had a good New Year's Eve, and that you didn't have to spend it in jail.  On the other hand, if you were hoping to spend it in jail because you preferred that to spending it with your in-laws, then I hope you did have to spend it in jail.

Reuters quoted "Italian media" (always a reliable source), as reporting that a 35-year-old Sicilian man showed up at a police station last Thursday asking to be arrested because he did not want to have to spend the evening with his family.  Reportedly, police turned him away because, so far as they could tell, he had not actually committed a crime.  So he did.  It wasn't much of a crime — he just went yo a shop next door, grabbed a pack of gum and threatened the owner — but it was apparently enough.

On the other hand, this report doesn't specifically say that the man actually had to spend the night in jail, so maybe they decided the most appropriate punishment was to take him home instead.
