The Smithsonian Institution has said thanks, but no thanks, after being offered the suit O.J. Simpson was wearing in 1995 when he was acquitted of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. The suit has been the subject of a long court battle between Simpson, Fred Goldman, and Simpson’s former agent Mike Gilbert. The report doesn’t say who was pushing to have the suit donated to the Smithsonian, or what the other parties might have wanted to do with it, although I assume O.J. wanted to go through the pockets to look for the real killers.
The Smithsonian said no just one day after the three parties reached an agreement to offer the suit. A spokesperson simply said that the museum had decided the suit was not appropriate for its collection. I’m on board with that decision. The suit is certainly part of American history, but a part that I think most of us would like to forget.
Presumably Simpson himself was not offered to the museum because he is already part of a collection currently on display at the Lovelock Correctional Gallery in Nevada.
