Underhill’s “Lowering the Bar” blog is quite funny. Read his “about the author” bio here: if you like that, as I did, you’ll probably find the rest of the blog funny, too.

The judge’s three-page order, first reported on the legal humor Web site Lowering the Bar, is what lawyers call a “benchslap.” It opens ominously with the suggestion that the lawyers opposing the delay are the unhappy sort who “lose sight of their role as professionals, and personalize the dispute; converting the parties’ disagreement into a lawyers’ spat.”

Honorable Mention: Lowering the Bar

The law is usually a serious affair written by serious people covering serious topics. Lowering the Bar serves to inject a few laughs into that mix with posts several times a week looking for humor in bizarre sentences, response deadlines missed by two decades and other unusual happenings.

Run by Shook Hardy & Bacon partner Kevin Underhill, who kicked off the blog in 2006, Lowering the Bar includes series on “assorted stupidity” and ridiculous reasons behind crimes.

“It’s sort of a humorous look at laws and funny situations that come up across the U.S. and the world’s court systems,” said Lee. “It’s great, it’s very entertaining and usually will provide great watercooler fodder at law firms around the country.”
