Sumo World Says “No Thanks” to Pants
The report notes that Japan’s professional sumo association has rejected a request that children be allowed to compete in “sumo pants,” something like bike shorts, rather than the traditional butt-exposing “mawashi,” so that more of them will take up the sport.
“The national stadium has its rules and ways of doing things,” the paper quoted a Sumo Kyokai spokesperson as saying. “We have no intention of allowing children in pants into the ring.”
